What to expect on BenefitsCal

1. Create an account or sign in to an existing one
  • Visit BenefitsCal.com
  • Create an account using your email and password, or log in to an existing account.

Begin a new application or return to one you already started on BenefitsCal.

You will answer questions about:

  • The people in your home
  • Money you get (like income, benefits, or other support)
  • Your expenses (like bills, child care, or medical costs)
  • Who you usually buy and make food with

Counties may ask for:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of income
  • Proof of rent or housing expenses (like a lease, rent receipt, or landlord letter)
  • Utility bills
  • Expense documents for children, older adults, or people with disabilities


You can start your application even if you don’t have all your documents yet. Visit BenefitsCal to submit your documents.

What happens after you apply

These steps happen outside of BenefitsCal.

  • Most people complete an interview with their county, usually by phone.
  • If you prefer, you can ask for an in-person interview. You can request this in your BenefitsCal application or by contacting your county CalFresh office.
  • You’ll get a notice in the mail with your interview date, time, and how to join the interview.
  • Most CalFresh decisions are made within 30 days after you submit the application.
  • Some households may get benefits sooner. Visit our FAQs to see if you might qualify for faster processing.
